DBC’s History Lesson: Epcot Idea in 1966

Note: DBC stands for Disney By Chris.

For our history lesson for today, let’s go back to 1966.

Walt Disney showed his viewers on television his Disney World Project in Florida. First he showed his his idea for a theme park in Florida. It’s similar to his Disneyland Park in California.

Then, he showed his:

Experimental

Prototype

Community

Of

Tomorrow

He called it Epcot!!

Walt’s Original Idea was to make Epcot a city.

Which includes: Recreational Parks, A Big Hotel, Convention and City Centers, Monorail and PeopleMover Stations, etc.

However, Walt passed away on December 15, 1966 and the Epcot plan was on hold.

After the Magic Kingdom Park in Florida opened in 1971, Disney Imagineers wanted to revive the Epcot project.

Instead of making it into a city, they decided to make Epcot a second Disney park in Florida. Disney Imagineers did that because they can’t run a city without Walt’s supervision.

Epcot was later opened to the public on October 1, 1982. 30 years ago!!!

That’s our history lesson for today!!!

C.A.T. (Chris’s Attraction Trivia): Club 33

Look at the vulture in the trophy room at Club 33.

PICT6695

This Audio-Animatronics figure was originally intended to allow an actor to interact with the guests while they dined. Microphones were built in to the chandeliers over the tables, and would allow an actor in another room to listen in on conversations, and surprise guests by joining in. The vulture would move and converse with the guests.  Sadly, it wasn’t completed before Walt Disney’s death in 1966, and so it was never actually used. The vulture is still perched up on the corner of the trophy room.

Rocket Rods

One of the most popular Tomorrowland attractions at Disneyland Park that didn’t last long was Rocket Rods. The ride vehicle contained five seats. One in the front row, one in the second row, one in the third row, and two together in the back row.

This ride replaced the PeopleMover and it was opened in  November 1998. Throughout it’s time, it seemed to be broken down frequently. The line was always long, but it was worth the wait. The ride closed it’s doors in April 2001.

Two months after Disney’s California Adventure opened.

Hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July yesterday!!
If you are at the Disney Parks and planning to return home sometime next week, here are some attractions I recommend for the 4th of July celebration this week.

  • Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln (Main Street U.S.A.)

At Walt Disney World:
  • The Hall of Presidents (Liberty Square, Magic Kingdom)
  • The American Adventure (World Showcase, Epcot)

PeopleMover

This is one of the most popular Tomorrowland attractions of all time. The PeopleMover was first opened at Disneyland in 1967 and it was closed in 1995. Rocket Rods replaced it in 1998.  That attraction didn’t last long as well.  We’ll talk more about it in the future.
Eight years after Disneyland opened it, Disney Imagineers opened another one in 1975 at the Magic Kingdom in Florida. However, they called it the “WED-way PeopleMover” and later in 1994, it was renamed once again the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. The one in Florida is still open today.
Check back later and see which current Tomorrowland attractions in the Magic Kingdom can be seen as part of the PeopleMover tour.

Chris’s Tip Time: FASTPASS

Are you getting sick and tired of waiting in line for the popular Disney Attractions?
Use Disney’s FASTPASS. A free guest service that saves your place in line at some of the most popular attractions like Splash Mountain or select other attractions.
Here’s how it works. Once you enter a Disney Park, check your park map and see which attractions include FASTPASS availability. After you arrive, walk up to the FASTPASS Machine and insert your park admission ticket. Once the green bulb lights up, take your admission ticket out and the machine will print out your FASTPASS. When you receive it, check your pass and see your return time as seen in the picture below.
Please Note: Sometimes, you can get another FASTPASS Ticket before the actual return time. Look at the bottom and see the next available time to get another FASTPASS for another attraction. In this example, the time is earlier than the actual return time.

Carthay Circle Theater

One of the buildings that opened last week at the new entrance of Disney’s California Adventure is the replica of the Carthay Circle Theater. The exact same place where Walt Disney hosted the premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs 75 years ago.
The theater in real life first opened in Hollywood during the mid-1920s. It was also named as one of the best movie theaters in Hollywood until it was demolished in 1969.
In June of 2012, Disney Imagineers created and opened their replica of the theater at California Adventure.  However on the inside, it’s a restaurant and lounge on the first floor. As for the second floor, it’s Club 1901. Or as the guests call it “The Club 33 of California Adventure”.

Friday, June 22, 2012

Chris’s Tip Time: PeopleMover

If the Magic Kingdom in Florida gets crowded in the afternoon, guests can ride on some attractions that are usually NOT as crowded. One of them is the Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. This is one of my favorite attractions. Guests can ride on an small elevated train for a nice relaxing tour around the Tomorrowland area.
Check back later for the trivia about this “PeopleMover” attraction!!

DBC’s History Lesson: The Hall of Presidents

Note: DBC Stands for Disney By Chris
For our History Lesson for today, let’s go back to 1993 at the Magic Kingdom Park in Florida.
The Hall of Presidents in Liberty Square was closed so the Imagineers could create and install the Audio-Animatronics figure of Bill Clinton, who was elected President of the United States in 1992.
Disney Imagineers recorded President Clinton’s voice and he became be the first of the U.S. Presidents to provide his own voice for the Animatronics' figure.
Since then, the current U.S. President now provides his/her voice for the Audio-Animatronics figure designed after them. A new president is added every time the People of the United States elect him/her into The White House.
That’s our History Lesson for today!!!!

NEW Entrance at California Adventure

Last week at Disney’s California Adventure, NOT only did the NEW Cars Land open, but the NEW Entrance of the park opened as well.
The new entrance resembles Buena Vista Street in the 1920s when Walt Disney moved to California. It features the replica of the Carthay Circle Theater. In the theater, there’s a lounge and restaurant on the first floor and they have Club 1901 on the second floor.
There’s also the ticket entrance that was designed after the ticket entrance of Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.
We will upload the photos as soon as we can.

C.A.T. (Chris’s Attraction Trivia): Indiana Jones Adventure

Unlike the three different endings in Horizons at Epcot, Indiana Jones Adventure at Disneyland contains three different beginnings.
Once you enter your ride vehicle, your “journey” begins.
You head towards The Chamber of Destiny. It has three doors, in other words, three alternate paths.
The Yellow Path goes directly to The Treasure Room
The Purple Path gives you The Power to Seek the Future
And…
The Blue Path goes directly to The Fountain of Youth!!!!

Disney and ABC

In 1954, Walt Disney was selecting a major television network to air his first TV show entitled Walt Disney’s "Disneyland”!!
The network that Walt picked was ABC.  The Disneyland Show aired from 1954 to 1958!!
In 1955, The Mickey Mouse Club aired on ABC on October 3, 1955. Three to Four months after Disneyland Park in California opened!!!
Until the early 1960s, Walt wanted to air his shows in color, but ABC refused due to the prices of color broadcasting. So, Walt moved his colored shows to another network which was NBC!!!
Later in 1996, Michael Eisner, who was the CEO of Disney, purchased ABC and later owned America’s major sports cable channel, ESPN!!!!

BREAKING NEWS- Dateline: Epcot

Walt Disney World has announced that they are re-imagining, one of their most popular thrill rides, Test Track.
As you already heard sometime ago, Epcot is planning to change the popular automobile thrill ride. They already changed sponsorships from General Motors to Chevrolet!! In addition, they will remove all of the GM vehicles out of the auto show located at the exit of the ride and keep all of the Chevrolet vehicles. Why? Because Chevrolet is owned by General Motors.
Epcot originally announced that this NEW Test Track adventure would open around October 1st as part of Epcot’s 30th Anniversary celebration.
BUT, due to the re-imagining process, the Walt Disney World resort has pushed the opening date back to sometime between late November and/or December of this year!!

The History of Club 33

Did you know that Club 33 was one of the last projects that Walt Disney created for Disneyland?

Walt Disney was planning to make Club 33 a reality when he was at the New York World's Fair in the mid 1960s. During his time there, he visited the VIP lounges. It gave Walt a dream to create a private lounge at Disneyland.

When Walt came back to Burbank, he started to create the club.

Unfortunately, Walt passed away in 1966 and Club 33 opened in the summer of 1967 at Disneyland's New Orleans Square.

Before Walt died, he asked Production Designer Dorothea Holt Redmond and Oscar winning Set Designer Emile Kuri to work on Club 33.

Check back and see the two artists behind the club.
